The subject of Political Science has undergone radical change in recent years. It is now being taught and studied from multidisciplinary perspectives. Political Science has drawn current ideas and issues heavily from other related social sciences like Sociology, Economics, History, Cultural Anthropology and Social Psychology. In fact, it has become an interdisciplinary subject of study. Therefore, the courses have been carefully designed to meet the challenging needs of the time. The aim of this program is to build academic competence and professional skills needed for employment in responsible positions in all sectors i.e., public, private and Non-Government Organizations (NGOs). Those who are interested in teaching in colleges or universities, will have to complete a one year Master’s Program after the successful completion of four years undergraduate Program.
The students are required to complete 42 courses. The number of credit hours is shown against each course. In order to be eligible for a degree, students must earn required number of credits -123.
First Year
1st Semester (9 Credits)
BDS-101. Bangladesh Studies (3 Credits)
This course provides students with a general understanding of various topics covering the overall concept of Bangladesh History, Geography, Society, Politics and Environment.
ENG-101. Communication Skills (3 Credits)
The course focuses on the communication skills- listening, speaking, reading and writing at the elementary level. The course will teach the students different strategies of effective listening, speaking, reading and the techniques of writing paragraph and letter. In addition, this course aims at developing and understanding of the essential English grammar among the students.
COM-101. Developing Computer Skills-I (3 Credits)
This course will provide students the basic knowledge of computer such as hardware, software, computer languages, operating systems, compilers and data communication as well as practical knowledge of different types of operating systems and application packages.
2nd Semester (9 Credits)
PSGS-101. Political Thought: Ancient Period (3 Credits)
The objective of the course is to provide the students with the Political philosophy of the masters political thinkers – Plato and Aristotle of the Ancient Period.
ENG-102. Academic Skills-I (3 Credits)
The course is designed to enable students to develop their competence in speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar for academic purposes. The course will emphasize on writing different types of essay, Individual and collaborative oral presentations, reading a wide range of texts and taking and summarizing class lecture notes effectively.
COM-102. Developing Computer Skills -II (3 Credits)
The aim of this subject is to ensure that the students should a basic idea for developing static and dynamic web pages using HTMI, JavaScript and ASP, creating simple database and manipulation & store any kinds of data. This course is designed to provide a framework within which students can explore the issues, web technologies, tools concerns relating to information systems in a business context.
3rd Semester (12 Credits)
PSGS-102. Political Thought: Medieval period (3 Credits)
The objective of the course is to provide the students with information about the political philosophy of the middle Ages.
PSGS-103. Political Theory and Organization (3 Credits)
This course aims at clarifying the various fundamental concepts of Political Theory such as Society, Community, Power, Sovereignty, Constitution etc. It also discusses different forms of government and Political Institutions and their functions.
ENG-103.Academic Skills-II(3 Credits)
The main focus of this course is writing and reading. This course aims to develop students’ analytical abilities. It will enhance students’ writing abilities through argumentative writing, expository writing, writing reviews of books or movies, and writing longer essay or dissertation. Besides, the course attempts to build schematic knowledge and to take a critical stance to context through reading a wide range of texts.
ECON-101. Fundamentals of Economics (3 Credits)
The objective of the course is to impart knowledge about the basic concepts/principles of Economics. The course will also throw light as to how various economic Systems or Institutions operate.
Second Year
4th Semester (12 Credits)
SOC-201. Principles of Sociology (3 Credits)
The study of Sociology is of paramount importance in understanding and solving social problems. Sociological knowledge is necessary for understanding and planning of society. This course helps the students to acquire knowledge about society, social groups, social institutions, associations and their functions.
PSGS-201. Comparative Foreign Governments (UK, USA, India) (3 Credits)
This course will help the students to understand and analyze the different forms of government in comparative perspective.
PSGS-202. Modern Political Thought (3 Credits)
This course is critically important for the students of Political Studies to be acquainted with the political philosophy of the great thinkers of the Modern Period.
PSGS-203. Socio-Political Development in British India (1757-1947) (3 Credits)
This course helps the students to understand the socio-economic and political background of the British Rule in India since 1757-1947.
5th Semester (12 Credits)
PSGS-204. Socio-Political Development in Pakistan (1947-1971). (3 Credits)
The objective of the course is to provide the students with information about the issues / problems that resulted from the authoritarian rule of Pakistan government over East Pakistan and eventually the emergence of Bangladesh as an independent state because inevitable.
PSGS-205. Politics and Government in Bangladesh (3 Credits)
This is an important course for the students of Political Science. Every student is expected to be acquainted with the socio-economic background of the emergence of Bangladesh and the critical issues of the Post –liberation Bangladesh.
PSGS-206. Public Administration in Bangladesh (3 Credits)
This course will provide extensive knowledge about Government policies and programs which are implemented by the permanent officials of the government. Besides this students will gather ideas about the structure, nature and functions of administration in Bangladesh.
PSGS-207.Fundamentals of International Politics (3 Credits)
International Politics is an important area of study which is closely related to modern nation-states. It is because of protecting and promoting national interests, the study of International politics is absolutely essential. Student will gather comprehensive theoretical knowledge about various international issues from this course.
6th Semester (12 Credits)
PSGS-208. Qualitative Research Methods (3 Credits)
This course will provide extensive knowledge to the students about Qualitative Research Methods which will help them to conduct social research in various levels.
PSGS-209. Gender and Politics in Bangladesh (3 Credits)
This course will help the students to understand Women’s position in a society like Bangladesh. Women in Bangladesh are socially oppressed and exploited in many ways. This course will specially focus on Women’s position and status, level of empowerment, violence against women, and contribution of women in society.
PSGS-210. Local Government and Rural Development (3 Credits)
About 80% people of Bangladesh live in the Rural Areas. Bangladesh is committed to promote democracy and people’s participation in all activities relating to development and decision making process at the grazes root level. This course will help the students to understand how the Local Government works to ensure rural development in Bangladesh.
PSGS-211.Quantitative research Methods (3 Credits)
The objective of the course is to provide the students with statistical knowledge and its application in analyzing politics / political issues.
Third Year
7th Semester (9 Credits)
PSGS-301. Political Culture and Political Socialization (3 Credits)
By using the concept of the political culture, we can understand the politics or political system of any country whether it is democratic or non-democratic. Political culture is the product of political socialization. There are different types of political culture. Accordingly, there are different forms of government. This course will help the students to under stand the concept of political culture and the importance of political socialization.
PSGS-302. Political Economy of Bangladesh (3 Credits)
This course is closely related to political studies. Political functions in fact, are the economic functions of the state: This course will assist the students to know what important economic functions the government or state performs.
PSGS-303. Government and Development Strategies in East Asia: China, Malaysia and Korea (3 Credits)
This course will help the students to learn the lessons as how the East Asian countries have achieved tremendous economics development.
8th Semester (9 Credits)
PSGS-304. Problems of Governance in Bangladesh (3 Credits)
This course will discuss various problems of governance in Bangladesh and how this problem could be resolved to ensure good governance in Bangladesh.
PSGS-305. Politics, Power and Corruption (3 Credits)
There concepts is Politics, Power and Corruption are closely related to one another. This course will make an attempt to clarify these concepts and also will discuss the causes of corruption and its remedies.
PSGS-306. Human Rights and Rule of Law in a Changing World (3 Credits)
The concept of Human Rights and Rule of Law is also closely related – violation of human rights is taking place both in the developed and the developing countries. Human Right can be protected by implementing rule of law. This course will discuss the state of human right in general, particularly in Bangladesh and the measures of combating human rights violations
9th Semester (12 Credits)
PSGS-307. Theories of Development (3 Credits)
This course will focus on various developmental theories which will give the students overall ideas of underdevelopment and development in post colonial countries.
PSGS-308. Governance and Development (3 Credits)
This course will cover various issues related to Governance and Development .The students will gather theoretical and practical knowledge from this course which will help them to asses a country’s governance environment and over all development situation.
PSGS-309. Research Methodology and Monograph (3 Credits)
The knowledge of research methodology is essentially needed for students who want to analyze politics or political issues systematically and scientifically. This course will help the student to conduct any research with the help of research tools or research methods.
PSGS-310. Theories of Underdevelopment (3 Credits)
The objective of the course is to provide the students extensive knowledge of understanding about the process of underdevelopment of the post-colonial societies. The student will acquire theoretical as well as practical knowledge from various case studies in 3rd world perspectives.
Fourth Year
10th Semester (9 Credits)
PSGS-401. Globalization, Regionalism and International Financial Institutions (3 Credits)
This course is concerned with the broader issues concerning transformations in the world economy and their effects. This course also makes an attempt to provide the students with an overview of the main aspects and issues in globalization, empirical evidence on the effects of globalization and the challenges for the successful governance of globalization.
PSGS-402. Organizational Theory and Behavior (3 Credits)
This course provides a theoretical orientation to the study of organizations. It also examines different theories of organization, its structures and processes. The course also examines how individuals behave into groups and teams. Finally the course will discuss organizational culture and structure and examine how these concepts can influence behavior in the organization.
PSGS-403. Public Policy in Bangladesh (3 Credits)
This course intends to look at some basic concepts including various policy models to describe, explain and evaluate policymaking process in Bangladesh. Besides general and theoretical understanding of public policy, some major specific public policies in the field of health, environment and education in Bangladesh will be analyzed.
11th Semester (9 Credits)
PSGS-404. Environment and Development (3 Credits)
The course will introduce the students to the world of environment and development by acquainting them with the key concepts, debates, approaches, issues and strategies.
PSGS-405. Project Management (3 Credits)
The course will introduce the students the projects and project analysis by acquainting them with the key concepts, approaches and tools relating to the analyses and dynamics of project management. At the end, the students are expected learn how to make a project design and analysis both globally and nationally.
PSGS-406. Poverty Alleviation: Programs and Strategies (3 Credits)
The course will help the students to develop comprehensive ideas about policies, strategies and interventions adopted by the public and private sectors to reduce poverty in Bangladesh.
12th Semester (9 Credits)
PSGS-407. Civil Society and Development (3 Credits)
The aim of this course is to examine the nature and processes involved in development and to familiarize students with the theoretical explanations and debate concerning the Civil Society and Development. This course also explores the contributions that civil society organizations can make sustainable development and constructive social change. It emphasizes experiences from the developing world.
PSGS-408. E-Governance and IT (3 Credits)
To enrich student’s knowledge and skills in E-Governance and IT that will make them capable to work in modern world.
PSGS-409. Contemporary International Politics and World Order (3 Credits)
This course will cover some contemporary International issues which play an important role in international politics. Besides this it includes nature of international conflict, arms race with new dimension, potential nuclear powers and their behavior in international politics, multinational corporations and other non state actors, Regional organizations and various international alliance and new world order.
