BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Simeen Mahmud studied Statistics at the Dhaka University and Medical Demography at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She joined the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies in 1974 as Staff Demographer and recently retired as Research Director in the Population Studies Division. She was a MacArthur Fellow at the Havard Centre for Population and Development in 1993. She is currently Lead Researcher at the BRAC development Institute of BRAC University. Her past research has been on demographic estimation, the relationship between women’s work, status and fertility and demographic transition under poverty. Her current research focuses primarily on women’s work, pathways of women's empowerment, NGO contributions to deepening democracy and mobilization for citizenship and rights.
